Golden Marigold
Marigold also known as calendula is a common garden plant, producing lush yellow blossoms that open and close in time with the sun, from which the plant derives its other name, solsequia. The botanical name derives from the belief that the bloom was always open on the first of each month, thus the Latin name Kalends.
The flowers are considered to be the medicinal part as they contain saponins, flavone, gycosides and vitaminA. As a topical compress marigold is recommended for inflammation of the eyes and can be applied to the skin to help with eczema. It is a soothing antiseptic and an excellent skin healer. Doctors during the American Civil War applied calendula to treat open wounds of the soldiers.
