Melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone produced in the pineal gland in humans and regulates the circadian cycle. The production of melatonin is inhibited by light and is secreted with the absence of light. When melatonin is produced it regulates sleep patterns. As we get older it has been thought that we produce less melatonin and therefore have a more erratic sleep pattern.
Melatonin that you find in the health food store is often synthesized from plants and is basically non-toxic. I've taken melatonin for years and have found it especially useful against the dreaded jet lag.
